On the morning of August 19, 2024, Tan Tao University (TTU) mourned the passing of People’s Teacher. Labor Hero. Prof. Dr. Vo Tong Xuan, a distinguished scientist and the university’s first Provost. His passing is not only a great loss to his family and loved ones but also a significant sorrow for the Vietnamese education and scientific community. Throughout his life, Prof. Vo Tong Xuan made substantial contributions to elevating the status of Vietnam’s education and agriculture, leaving a valuable legacy for future generations.
As a distinguished scientist, Prof. Dr. Vo Tong Xuan made significant contributions to global food security, particularly through his research and development of new rice varieties such as ST25, which was recognized as the world’s best rice, and disease-resistant rice strains. These efforts greatly enhanced the productivity and quality of Vietnamese agricultural products. Due to his immense contributions to Vietnam’s agriculture, Prof. Dr. Vo Tong Xuan was honored at the 2023 VinFuture Prize, making him the first Vietnamese scientist to be recognized by the world’s most prestigious science and technology award dedicated to serving humanity.
Not only did Prof. Dr. Vo Tong Xuan excel in the field of agriculture, but he also made a significant impact in education, particularly during his tenure as the first Provost of Tan Tao University. With a strategic vision and dedication to nurturing talent, he collaborated with Prof. Dr. Dang Thi Hoang Yen, the founder of Tan Tao University, to share the vision of national development through education. Driven by a strong belief in training talent to serve the nation, he devoted himself to building a modern private university, aiming to educate generations of students who are knowledgeable and socially responsible.
The legacy of Prof. Dr. Vo Tong Xuan extends far beyond his achievements; it is an endless source of inspiration for generations of students, lecturers, and scientists. His tireless dedication has brought lasting value not only to Tan Tao University but also to the education and agriculture sectors of Vietnam. What he left behind will always be a driving force for us to continue striving for a brighter future.
