On February 25, 2025, the Faculty of Medicine at Tan Tao University (TTU) hosted a special seminar titled “Medical Education Methods in Canada and Vietnam” featuring Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elsie T. Nguyen – Head of Cardiovascular Imaging at the University of Toronto and President of the Canadian Society of Thoracic Radiology (CSTR).

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elsie T. Nguyen participated in this seminar as part of her working visit to Vietnam

The event attracted a large number of students, providing in-depth insights into international medical training models and the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare.

Understanding the Medical Training Systems in Canada and Vietnam

During the session, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elsie T. Nguyen analyzed the key differences between medical education in Canada and Vietnam, covering aspects such as curriculum structure, teaching methodologies, and clinical practice opportunities. The Canadian medical training system emphasizes early clinical exposure and research-oriented education. In contrast, Vietnam’s system primarily focuses on theoretical foundations before students engage in practical training.

She also highlighted the crucial role of mentorship, advising students to seek experienced professionals who can guide them throughout their journey to becoming successful doctors.

Artificial Intelligence – A Transformative Trend in Medicine

One of the most engaging topics of the seminar was the rapid development of AI in the healthcare sector. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elsie T. Nguyen explained how AI is revolutionizing diagnostic and treatment processes, particularly in medical imaging.

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elsie T. Nguyen, AI will serve as a powerful assistant for medical professionals rather than replacing them

The doctor emphasized that AI will not completely replace physicians but will serve as a powerful assistant, enhancing diagnostic accuracy, optimizing treatment time, and improving overall healthcare quality. Understanding and applying this technology will be a significant advantage for future generations of doctors.

Inspiring Future Medical Professionals

Beyond technical discussions, the seminar provided students with a valuable opportunity to ask questions, engage in discussions on overcoming academic pressure, build resilience, and maintain motivation in pursuing a medical career. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elsie T. Nguyen’s real-life experiences and insights offered students a clearer perspective on their academic journey and professional development.
