On the evening of August 12, 2024, Tan Tao University hosted an online Q&A session with the leadership of the School of Medicine, attracting over 160 participants, including students, new students, and parents interested in the field of medicine. This special event featured Prof. Dr. Thach Nguyen, Vice Provost and Dean of the School of Medicine at Tan Tao University, along with faculty members: Dr. Diep Thanh Tuong, Vice Dean of the School of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Le Quang Nghia, Prof. Dr. Le Van Cuong, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Huy Tru, creating a valuable forum for exchanging medical knowledge.

A perspective from an inspiring teacher

Prof. Dr. Thach Nguyen, Vice Provost and Dean of the School of Medicine at Tan Tao University, offered profound insights into the value and significance of internships in the United States for Vietnamese medical students. He emphasized that international internships are not only an opportunity for students to access advanced diagnostic methods but also a chance to learn and practice patient care procedures according to international standards. These are invaluable experiences that help students not only enhance their medical knowledge but also cultivate compassion and dedication to their patients. He reminded future generations of medical students to always remember to “care for patients with both heart and mind”.

Prof. Dr. Thach Nguyen also shared his personal experiences during his visits to Vietnam. He frequently visits hospitals, directly observing and assessing how students practice to ensure that the future medical workforce is not only strong in theory but also skilled in practical application. He expressed deep respect for the faculty members in Vietnam, who have consistently shown perseverance and dedication, overcoming material challenges to train generations of outstanding medical students. Prof. Thach Nguyen’s words not only served as a source of inspiration but also reminded students of the importance of continuous effort on the path to becoming skilled and ethical physicians.

Sharing opportunities for professional skill development in the United States

Dr. Vu Tri Loc—an alumnus and currently a faculty member at the School of Medicine at Tan Tao University—provided parents and new students with insightful information about the comprehensive development opportunities offered by the School of Medicine. He emphasized that the curriculum at TTU’s School of Medicine is not only of high quality and well-structured but also guided by a dedicated and experienced faculty. With a bilingual English-Vietnamese program and an IELTS exit requirement of 5.5 or equivalent, TTU students are equipped with a solid foundation to confidently step into the world and pursue international medical careers.

The students who participated in internships in the United States particularly emphasized the significant advantages Tan Tao University students have when given the opportunity to intern there. They highlighted that, during their time in the U.S., they were not only involved in advanced clinical activities and cutting-edge scientific research programs but also had the chance to attend cardiology symposiums, discuss the latest medical training technologies, and gain hands-on experience in the labs of some of the world’s leading medical centers. Moreover, students immersed themselves in unique cultural activities, participating in traditional festivals alongside locals, which expanded their perspectives and deepened their understanding of international cultures. These invaluable experiences not only allowed students to excel professionally but also equipped them with essential soft skills, preparing them to face challenges in their global medical careers.

Building a foundation for the future

One of the highlights of the program was the deep interest shown by both students and parents, as evidenced by the numerous questions submitted to the organizers even before the event began. During the Q&A session, Prof. Dr. Thach Nguyen and the faculty physicians thoughtfully addressed these inquiries, providing diverse and practical perspectives on the journey of studying and practicing medicine.

When asked about the differences between medical training programs in Vietnam and abroad, Prof. Dr. Thach Nguyen affirmed that while there are differences in the learning environment and teaching methods, the ultimate goal of educators in every country remains the same: to train skilled and competent doctors who are capable of serving the community effectively.

He emphasized that exposure to the advanced medical environment in the United States would enable Tan Tao University students to broaden their perspectives, learn innovative methods, and apply them to improve healthcare quality in Vietnam. When discussing the study pathway and how the university supports students in accessing U.S. medical education, Prof. Dr. Thach Nguyen encouraged students to proactively seek out and seize opportunities. He assured that the faculty at Tan Tao University is always ready to provide full support, helping students achieve their dreams and aspirations.

Prof. Dr. Le Quang Nghia encouraged students to strive and make continuous efforts to learn from their teachers, peers, and predecessors

Prof. Dr. Le Quang Nghia added that the combination of academic training at the university and clinical practice at major hospitals in the country will help Tan Tao University students quickly enhance their knowledge and skills. With the dedicated guidance of the faculty and their own continuous efforts, students will grow increasingly mature and confident in their career paths.

Prof. Dr. Le Van Cuong advised future generations of students that to become a good doctor, one must be persistent and committed to lifelong learning

Prof. Dr. Le Van Cuong delivered heartfelt remarks, encouraging the study spirit and dedication of students at the School of Medicine. He emphasized that medicine is a profession highly respected and honored by society, but the journey to becoming a good doctor is far from easy. Doctors and medical students must make many sacrifices, particularly the continuous effort required for lifelong learning. Prof. Cuong also encouraged students to always be ready to adapt to new advancements in science and technology in order to rise and become outstanding doctors in the future.

At the end of the program, Dr. Diep Thanh Tuong, Vice Dean of the School of Medicine, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Huy Tru offered heartfelt encouragement to the students, urging them to nurture their passion and love for the medical path they have chosen. They emphasized that dedicating oneself fully to one’s passion is the key to overcoming all challenges and difficulties. “Listen to and cherish the teachings from your mentors, and you will surely succeed!”—Dr. Diep Thanh Tuong’s confident affirmation provided additional strength and motivation for students to confidently pursue their journey toward becoming outstanding doctors in the future.

The program was a great success, providing valuable knowledge and strong inspiration, helping students gain clearer direction in their academic pursuits and career development while also addressing the concerns of parents. The event reaffirmed Tan Tao University’s commitment to continuously striving to train generations of talented doctors with the competence and dedication to contribute to the medical field in Vietnam and globally.
