The Paul Dudley White Award is named after Dr. Paul Dudley White, a pioneering figure in cardiology and one of the founders of the American Heart Association (AHA). It honors outstanding cardiovascular research worldwide and is given to the authors of the best study from each participating country at the 2024 AHA Scientific Sessions.
In 2024, the research team from the School of Medicine at Tan Tao University (TTU) made a significant mark by winning the Paul Dudley White International Scholar Award, presented by the American Heart Association. Surpassing other notable studies from Vietnam, including those from Military Hospital 108, Can Tho Central General Hospital, and Can Tho Cardiovascular Stroke Hospital, the research team proudly represented Vietnam to win the award. This marks the fourth consecutive year that Tan Tao University has received this honor, a testament to the exceptional research capabilities of Tan Tao’s cardiology experts under the guidance of Prof.Dr. Thach Nguyen.
The research team included: Dr. Vu Tri Loc (School of Medicine, Tan Tao University), Dr. Mai Quang Minh (School of Medicine, Tan Tao University), Dr. Huynh Nguyen Thuan (Class of 2014-2020, School of Medicine, Tan Tao University, currently at Thong Nhat Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City), Dr. Nguyen Duc Chinh (SIS Can Tho Hospital), Dr. Phan Thanh Tam (Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy), Dr. Huan Pham (Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, Pennsylvania, USA), Dr. Nguyen Quang Hien (Methodist Hospital, Indiana, USA), Dr. Truyen Thien Tan Tri Tai (Class of 2014-2020, School of Medicine, Tan Tao University, currently at Cedars-Sinai Hospital, California, USA), Dr. Ngo Duc Khiem (University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, Texas, USA), Dr. Le Pham Thao Vy (Methodist Hospital, Indiana, USA / Adjunct USMLE Lecturer, Tan Tao University), Dr. Hieu Nguyen (Methodist Hospital, Indiana, USA), Dr. Lam Vinh Sieu (Methodist Hospital, Indiana, USA), Associate Professor Dr. Ho Thuong Dung (Thong Nhat Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City), Professor Dr. Thach Ngoc Nguyen (Dean of the School of Medicine, Vice President, Tan Tao University), who were honored for their study, “Quantifying the Coronary Artery Slow Flow Phenomenon: Insight from Dynamic Angiography and Deep Learning.”
This study presents an innovative method for assessing coronary artery flow, designed for cath labs lacking access to automated contrast injector systems for coronary imaging. Under Prof. Dr. Thach Nguyen, Associate Professor Dr. Ho Thuong Dung, and Dr. Cao Tien Dung from the School of Information Technology, Tan Tao University, the team developed this method to enhance diagnostic capabilities and cardiovascular health care.
The award will be presented to the research team at the AHA 2024 conference, held from November 16-18, 2024, in Chicago, Illinois, USA. This achievement is not only a great honor for Tan Tao University but also a source of pride for Vietnamese medicine, as more research from young Vietnamese scientists is recognized on prestigious international medical platforms. This accomplishment demonstrates Tan Tao University’s continuous effort to contribute to the advancement of global medicine and promote groundbreaking innovations in medical research.
