Dr. Thach Nguyen – an inspirational teacher of medical students at Tan Tao University (TTU)

With continuous efforts in researching, in 2018, TTU’s School of Medicine has achieved admirable results with 14 topics and research projects in the field of cardiovascular. TTU medical students partially contributed to the results of those studies as co-authors, making abstract reports at international conferences and their reports were published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC). At JACC annual meeting, Prof. Thach Nguyen was interviewed on TCTMD TV channel for his research, on Cavitation theory that induces cholesterol in coronary arteries.

These research projects are all clinical, innovatory and essential to the field of cardiology. These projects are helping to find a cause or to figure out new ways of improving coronary risk interventions. Specifically, coronary lesions caused by the pressure of the gas bubble resulted from the pressure difference in the blood vessels. In addition, the research team at TTU discovered that the rupture of gas bubbles in the coronary arteries is most likely the mechanism breaking the thin cap of plaque causing acute coronary syndrome. As an experienced expert in the field of cardiovascular interventions, Prof. Thach Nguyen has assisted his students in finding out techniques in acupuncture, ensuring better treatment results for patients with heart failure. Non-invasive left ventricular end diastolic pressure method has been also identified by the research team of TTU medical students, promising to be widely used as a substitute for old invasive methods.

Truyen Thien Tan Tri Tai from TTU got the First Place as a young heart researcher of national medical students (competing with other students from Medical School of National University, Thu Duc; Medical School of Vo Truong Toan University, Can Tho; Ho Chi Minh Medical University; Hai Phong Medical University; and Danang Medical University).

The achievements mentioned above are also the result of collaborative research with doctors from many prestigious hospitals and universities around the world such as Rovigo General Hospital (Italy); Methodist Hospital (USA); Tulane University (New Orleans, USA); University of Chicago (USA), Indiana University (USA).

At present, the cardiac intervention method is already working, helping to address coronary artery obstruction and to treat myocardial infarction. This method is called stent placement. Although angioplasty for stent placement is highly successful (up to about 90 to 95% success rate), this is an invasive procedure that can cause bleeding and, at the same time, carries a greater risk of coronary artery stenosis or other risks such as bleeding, infections and drug allergies. The study at TTU has contributed to adjusting and improving stent placement procedure as well as limiting and detecting possible risks after the patient is discharged.

Hopefully, these achievements will be a source of motivation for students and faculties in the School of Medicine and for other research departments in TTU to keep up their good work in the path of successful learning and researching in the years ahead.
