World Directory Of Medical Schools

Since its establishment, the World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized the need for a trusted list of all medical schools around the world. Therefore, under the support of member countries, WHO compiled a directory of medical schools. The first edition of the directory was published in 1953 and then continuously updated for now. Since 2014, the list has been updated online at website: https://www.wdoms.org/.

Currently, the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) and The Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) are collaborating to gather information about medical schools to verify information as well as update. On that basis, since mid-2015, the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) has used the World Directory of Medical Schools in determining the eligibility of candidates taking the United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE) and ECFMG certification.

According to the list:

* The United States has 193 medical schools out of 50 states which is 330 million people.

* China has 187 medical schools compared with nearly 1.4 billion people.

* India – a country with 1.35 billion people and is known as a “doctor-exporting country” because about 2% of Indian doctors pass resident doctors in the US. A large number of US Hospital directors are Indians. It is not surprising that they have 448 medical schools on this list.

* In Southeast Asia, Thailand has 22 schools. The Philippines has 44 schools (nursing exports to the US).

List of Medical Schools in Vietnam

Currently, Vietnam has a few universities licensed but only 15 schools are on the list of the World Directory of Medical Schools. Among them, only 11 are appreciated by the US and Canada.

Despite the high tuition fees, there is only one accredited private medical training institution – Tan Tao University

In our country, there is only one private university – Tan Tao University that is listed in the WHO list as well as recognized by the US and Canada in doctor training despite the high tuition fee.

A special trait of the training program at Tan Tao University is that students will be taught billingually in Vietnamese – English. This enables medical students to be able to communicate with patients and work in domestic and foreign hospitals as well as research medical books in English and update the world’s medical advances.

In addition, TTU is the only institution to have a curriculum to prepare students for the USMLE. That made the difference for the School of Medicine as well as complying with the orientation of TTU – American Standard University in Vietnam.

Under the admission plan in the academic year 2020-2021, Tan Tao University enrolls in Biotechnology, along with 7 other majors: English Language, Computer Science, General Medicine, Nursing and Medical Technology, Business Administration and International Business.
