At the Summit of Leaders, she gave a speech for debate on the topic of Who is a 21st Century Business Leader? Below is her key notes of her speech.

“Good morning. I am very excited to be here at the Conference of Summit of Leaders as a presenter on the topic of Who is a 21st Century Business Leader?

If a company is like a ship afloat in a vast ocean, the business leader is the captain who stands at the helm and steers her through all weathers. The skill and daring of that captain determine the fortunes of the ship, just as the courage and wisdom of a business leader determine the level of success a company can attain. Some captains sail the ship to new lands brimming with possibility, others guide her safely into harbor, while other captains sink their ship in a hurricane or pilot her into a black hole, never to return. So it is with

business leaders and their companies.

The circle of life is birth, development and destruction. In all fields, researchers are looking for longevity. In medicine, there is the desire to seek the extension of youth. Environmentalists look for protection of the earth from extinction. Business leaders seek sustainable development.

The leader must have a mathematician’s mind in order to analyze and evaluate opportunities and risks. At the same time, the leader requires the soul of an artist with a burning passion to imagine and create, to take risks, to explore unknown horizons, and to soar to new heights. They also need to embrace the bravery of the Italian scientist and philosopher Giordano Bruno (1548-1600) who asserted that the Earth is not at the center of the universe, despite the Church’s warning that he would suffer dire consequences if he contradicted her teachings on the matter.

And finally, they must have the warm heart like that of Mother Teresa’s to devote themselves for the greater good of their communities.

“One swallow does not make a spring”. In my view, a business leader must embody all of these roles in order to lead and to inspire a successful company, here in the 21 st century and beyond.”
