The favor granted to liberal arts ones

“It’s in Apple’ DNA that technology alone is not enough. And that technology married with liberal arts, married with humanities that yields the result that makes our heart sing” – Steve Jobs at an annual event of Apple.Inc in 2011

In a survey conducted by Hart Research Associates, 501 directors, CEOs, and employers expressed their absolute confidence in higher education institutions, especially Liberal Arts universities. Harvard Business Review (HBR) – the most accredited magazine of Harvard University has showed that 82% of directors and 75% of employers believe that Liberal Arts graduates have developed important skills to outstand at work. (Yes! Employers Do Value Liberal Arts, HBR, 2019).

So why Liberal Art is treated as a treasure?

Before dive into this question, we need to understand the nature of Liberal Arts!

According to Dr. Mortimer J. Adler, one of the pioneers in Liberal Arts: “Liberal Arts, traditionally, aims at developing the human intellect. Those are the powers without which, we cannot complete any smart work. For this model, students are not only tied to any specific subject such as: Mathematics, Physics … but also learn about philosophical subjects such as History, Literature, Music and Arts”. (Importance of A Great Book Education, 2020)

And so, a new generation with freedom spirit – liberal thinking and free will to do whatever they want was born. For example, Mark Zukerberg, an outstanding individual of the Millennials (1981-1996) is a typical example of Liberal Arts Education. Fluent in French, Latin and Greek at high school, went to university to study psychology and computer science and eventually founded thefacebook.com – the dream of connecting people globally. Because of his expertise in many complementary fields, he has succeeded in running and leading the largest social network in the world today.

“I always appreciate the graduates of Liberal Arts. They are disciplined, oriented and equipped with critical thinking. If someone studies literature (like me, laughs), will understand customer psychology and have a deeper insight. And those who have such a broad background will succeed in their business”, said Michael Fromm, CEO of Fromm Electric.

Studying Everything and Still Unemployed?

  • “Liberal” means expanding option – there’s always an alternative.
  • “Arts” is the art of freeing yourself from the limits that we think imperative to succeed.

Instead of learning comprehensively, the university unleashes orientation so that students should not focus on a single field of expertise and head towards open opportunities to learn different things. (Vietcetera)

There is no education that guarantees 100% graduates will get well paid jobs, especially this is transitional time, between Biotechnology and Information Technology. (Yuval Noah Harari, 21 Lessons of 21st Century). The advantages of Liberal Arts are enlightening, high adaptability, and a comprehensive, multi-dimensional perspective. Therefore, many of the top CEOs in technology appreciate the Liberal Arts college graduates.

Vietnamese people often think that between industry and career is a one-to-one relationship, that is, remain working in the same industry. On the contrary, in fact, a law office still hires English graduates students to take different positions depending on their practical knowledge and skills. In the United States, only 27% of graduates have worked in fields related to university majors. (Vietcetera)

And for that reason, many talents were born. The mermaid coffee cup you drink daily was created by a son of Liberal Arts, Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks or the world’s most famous video social network, Youtube operated by Susan Wojcicki. And there are countless other stars who are shining under the guidance of free will and freedom of knowledge.
